How to read these numbers.
What they are
Every B.C. student writes the Foundation Skills Assessment in Grades 4 and 7, and provincial Numeracy and Literacy assessments in Grade 10. The percentage is the share of the students who wrote it who landed in the top bands — On Track or Extending for the FSA, Proficient or Extending in Grade 10.
Why the other two columns matter
A percentage on its own reads like a verdict. Grade 10 Numeracy runs near 50% across the whole province, so a school sitting at 42% is unremarkable rather than alarming. That’s why the district and provincial figures sit beside every number here, and why I’d rather show you all three than one.
What the † means
The ministry hides small counts so individual students can’t be identified. Where a row is marked, that figure is the combined total worked out from the counts they did publish — accurate, but one step removed from a number they reported directly.
What they don’t measure
Teaching, programs, the walk to the door, whether your kid will be happy there. These are two narrow tests, and the years differ — the FSA figures are newer than the Grade 10 ones. Use them to start a conversation with the school, not to end one. The Top Schools Guide goes further into what they do and don’t tell you.
